As a photographer, discovering new locations for shoots is always an exciting adventure. Recently, while planning a session near historic Fort Snelling in St. Paul, Minnesota, I stumbled upon a hidden gem that completely transformed our plans.

Fort Snelling State Park, nestled in the heart of the Twin Cities, proved to be a photographer's paradise. Not only does it offer a rich tapestry of natural beauty, but it also boasts a myriad of activities to suit every adventurer's fancy.

For fellow photographers looking to capture the essence of this picturesque locale, here are some tips:

  • Scout the Trails: Fort Snelling State Park is renowned for its extensive network of hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and skiing trails. These trails not only provide breathtaking backdrops for your photos but also offer opportunities for unique compositions and perspectives. Don't hesitate to explore off the beaten path to uncover hidden treasures.
  • Embrace the Water: Whether it's canoeing on Snelling Lake, casting a line for fishing, or taking a refreshing swim, water features abound in this park. Incorporating the serene beauty of the water into your photographs can add a sense of tranquility and depth to your compositions.
  • Chase the Light: The forested paths of Fort Snelling State Park offer a magical interplay of light and shadow, particularly during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. Be prepared to adapt to changing lighting conditions and experiment with different exposure settings to capture the enchanting atmosphere of the park.
  • Weather the Storm: Like any outdoor shoot, be prepared to embrace unexpected weather conditions. From sudden rain showers to dramatic cloud formations, inclement weather can often lead to the most stunning and dynamic photographs. Embrace the elements and use them to your advantage to create truly memorable images.

During our own shoot at Fort Snelling State Park, the sandy beaches against lush, forested trails provided a diverse range of captivating backdrops. Even as the rain poured down, we found ourselves immersed in the beauty of nature, capturing some of my favorite moments.

Fort Snelling State Park is not just a destination for outdoor enthusiasts but also a haven for photographers seeking to capture the raw beauty of the natural world. If you have some time, definitely go out to Fort Snelling State Park. Even if you just want to watch the planes fly overhead, which I also thoroughly enjoyed.
